Biography

Aboutou Roots: the pioneers of Youssoumba, music of the Ivorian lagoons

On the shores of Lauzoua, an island village in Grand-Lahou, the sound of a drum and a shaken bottle carries at night the voices of young people singing about the lives of fishermen. In 1986, four teenagers decided to transform these village songs into a new musical style. They would become the founders of Youssoumba, a genre that would earn its respectability on the Ivorian stage.

Youssoumba, a lagoon heritage

Youssoumba was born from the popular songs and village animations of the lagoon peoples in southern Côte d’Ivoire. It is performed with a drum, a shaken bottle used as a rattle, and harmonized voices that sing in chorus the main singer’s parts. The mapouka dance—a characteristic dance from southern Côte d’Ivoire popularized at the dawn of the 2000s—is traditionally associated with it. In 1986, Angelo Papa (N’Guessan Ange Christophe), Akess Bilo, Bibi and Dani Kouélé decided to transform these village songs into a show. Their name—Aboutou Roots—means “let’s have fun with the roots”. The group quickly became known in Abidjan and took a major step by committing to recording.

The first album, Protège-toi Volume 1, was released in 1996 by JAT Music and achieved immediate success with more than 120,000 cassettes sold. Protège-toi Volume 2 (1998) was then combined with the first in a European edition. Côte d’Ivoire la blessure (1999) marked a turning point: the tracks spoke of the tensions agitating the country, and the group asserted itself as a social voice. In 2002, La liberté n’a pas de prix confirmed this ambition; Hommage à Fifi was selected at Midem 2003 and included in the OIF compilation. At this time, Dani Kouélé left the group for France, turning the quartet into a trio.

From 2007 onwards, Aboutou Roots multiplied dates: MASA festival, live concert at Palais de la Culture in Treichville, then the 100% Zouglou Live concept launched at Le Lycée maquis in Marcory in May 2008, with performances every Friday. Vert Paradis in Cocody welcomed this format in February 2009. The group also performed in Senegal and Europe. Angelo Papa passed away on December 3, 2025 at Treichville CHU. The Ivorian government decorated him posthumously; his burial took place on January 10, 2026 at Williamsville cemetery. On October 8, 2023, the group gave its last major concert at AZK Live space in Cocody.

Heritage

Aboutou Roots remains the founding group of Youssoumba, a genre that influenced both zouglou and, to some extent, coupé-décalé—two styles that dominate contemporary Ivorian music. Angelo Papa, through his powerful voice, helped make Youssoumba known beyond the shores of Grand-Lahou, and the group continues to be cited as a reference by new generations of lagoon artists. The official tributes paid to it in 2025-2026 highlight the central place the group occupies in Ivorian musical heritage.
