From First Stages to Global Arenas

Georgette Nafiatou Adjoavi Bellow3 was born on January 1, 1945, in Tsévié4. She spent her childhood in Agoè-Nyivé, in the Gulf Prefecture. From an early age, her voice attracted attention: she sang tunes from different regions of Togo, learning local languages through music. After earning her elementary school certificate, she went to Abidjan to study secretarial work5 and take music theory lessons at the École des Beaux-Arts6.

In 1962, an artistic competition pitting Bella Bellow against Julie Akofa Akoussah was organized at the Centre culturel français de Lomé7. Her performance marked her audience8. Paul Ahyi9, her former high school drawing teacher, saw a promising career for her and introduced her to Gérard Akueson10, a Togolese producer who founded the record label Akue11 in Paris in 196212. Akueson became her impresario13 and gave her the stage name Bella Bellow14.

From 1965 onwards, President Hubert Maga invited her to sing in Cotonou for the celebrations of Dahomey’s independence. The following year, she represented Togo at the World Festival of Negro Arts in Dakar, an event that made her known throughout the continent15. The audience was fascinated by her warm, velvety voice. Gérard Akueson put her in contact with Manu Dibango, the famous Cameroonian saxophonist16, who became her artistic collaborator. Bella Bellow admired Miriam Makeba, from whom she drew inspiration to modernize Togolese folklores17.

Everywhere — Abidjan, Cotonou, Bamako, Dakar, Ouagadougou, Douala, Brazzaville — she was acclaimed18. Joseph Kokou Koffigoh, a guitarist in the orchestra Les Sans-Culottes at the high school, recalls: “Bella Bellow sang with a lot of emotion”19.

Rockia, International Glory and Legacy

In 1969, Bella Bellow released her first and only album, Rockia20, recorded in Paris under the Akue label21, arranged by Manu Dibango on keyboards22 and saxophone23. Jeannot Mandengue played bass, Ben’s on drums24 and Slim Pezin on guitar25. Rockia is the first pop album in Ewe, the singer’s mother tongue26.

The standout tracks include Zelie, an immediate hit27, and Denyigban, a hymn to her homeland28. Blewu addresses patience and life after death29. The lyrics draw from traditional tales, biblical texts30 and psychological themes31. At the Pan-African Festival in Algiers32, she finally reunited with her idol Miriam Makeba, who warmly congratulated her33.

Her career unfolded across the greatest stages34. The Olympia in Paris35, the Zénith36, and the Maracanãzinho in Rio de Janeiro37 where more than 100,000 spectators38 acclaimed her39. Athens40, Split in former Yugoslavia41, Bonn in Germany42, Belgium43 and the Caribbean Antilles44 also acclaimed her. Bem-bem45 appears on a 45 rpm single46. In 197147, she took control of her career48 and married, on January 20, 1972, the magistrate Théophile Jamier-Lévy49 in Atakpamé50. Her daughter Nadia Elsa was born that year51. She was preparing an American tour when everything came to a halt52.

On December 10, 197353, Bella Bellow returned to Togo for Christmas54. On the day of her arrival55, she died in a car accident56 at Lilikopé. Not wearing a seatbelt57, the car rolled before she was thrown forward58. She died almost immediately from a cerebral hemorrhage59. She was 27 years old60.

Legacy

Despite a brief career61, Bella Bellow deeply marked African music. Angélique Kidjo62 covered Zelie63 and Blewu64, performing the latter during the centenary of the 1918 armistice65. Vanessa Worou, considered her true heir66, paid tribute to her in 2008 with Ma Bella67. Abéti Masikini composed Ngoyaye Bella Bellow68 and Oscar Kidjo Ekou wo noubla nyuinoulo69.

The Togolese government protects her works70. The BCEAO honors her memory on the 10,000 CFA franc banknote71. The Bella Bellow Foundation, founded on December 14, 2013 and chaired by her daughter Nadia Elsa Agbodjan72, promotes education and music73. A national tribute74 was paid to her in 202475. Every year in Togo, December 10 is commemorated76.
