Dancehall (Jamaica)
Dancehall is a Jamaican musical style born in the 1980s, evolving from reggae and influencing American rap. Characterized by electronic rhythms, drum sequencers, and a declamatory MCing in Jamaican patois, dancehall is the music of dance floors and *« sound system »*s.
Pioneers include Shabba Ranks, Bounty Killer, E-Sha and later Sean Paul, Popcaan, Spice and the new arrivals. Dancehall has profoundly influenced Nigerian afrobeats, Dominican dembow and all modern Caribbean music.
Artists like Sizzla, Capleton and Anthony B carry dancehall roots (spiritual reggae), while Shaggy, Sean Paul and Busta Rhymes popularized the style internationally.
