Son cubano (Cuba)
The son cubano is a Cuban musical style born in eastern Cuba (Baracoa, Santiago de Cuba) at the beginning of the 20th century. It is the fusion of Spanish singing, African rhythms, and guitar — it is the root of all Latin Caribbean dances (salsa, mambo, cha-cha-chá).
Son is characterized by the tres (three-stringed Cuban guitar), the güiro, claves, and bass. Pioneering figures include los Three Keys Trio, Arsenio Rodríguez (who innovated by adding brass) and the Soneros.
Cuban son influenced Congolese soukous and all Caribbean music.
