Midaq Alley (زقاق المدق, Ziqāq al-Midāq), published in 1947 under the French title Passage des miracles, is considered the first major realist novel by Mahfouz. It depicts the lives of the inhabitants of a Cairo alley during the Second World War, intertwining crossed destinies and social aspirations.
