From the ends of the earth to WOMAD
The Malawi Mouse Boys come from a rural district in southern Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world2.
Their members grew up singing in their village church choir, where Sunday services drag on endlessly3.
When Brennan met them, they were all in their twenties. The producer, based in San Francisco, recorded a first track by Alfred Gavana, sung with such a soft voice that it was barely audible4.
Then came the chorus: twenty children huddled around them, aged two to eighteen, burst into harmony under a setting sun5.
Brennan said it was “one of the strongest musical moments of his life”6.
A few days later, Brennan returned to the village and hired four musicians: Alfred Gavana, Zondiwe Kachingwe, Nelson Muligo, and Joseph Nekwankwe7.
The group makes their own instruments — homemade guitar, percussion made from aluminum cans — because equipment is scarce in these countryside areas8.
He is #1, released in 2012, is the first pop album ever sung in Chichewa and broadcast internationally9.
International press fell into admiration10.
The Times compared the group to the Blind Boys of Alabama, and The New York Times noted that “the guitars don’t hold the chord, but the voices do. They are remarkably stable and resolved”11.
In 2013, Peter Gabriel invited the group to the WOMAD festival12.
It was their first trip outside Malawi, and they sang in Chichewa before more than ten thousand people13.
The impact was real14.
A glory without comfort
The second album, Dirt is Good, arrived in 201415.
Fifteen tracks, thirty-one minutes, an African gospel described as “naked and rough” by Songlines, blending hymns, reggae, and three-part harmonies16.
The third, Forever is 4 You (2016), more experimental, was less well received17.
Despite international recognition, life remains hard18.
The four men continue to sell mice along the road19.
Two of them had to leave for South Africa to find work20.
Locally, some judge them as opportunists — success has broken the trust of their village21.
Major works
| Work | Year | Why it’s essential |
|---|---|---|
| He is #1 | 2012 | First album in Chichewa internationally; raw African gospel voices |
| Dirt is Good | 2014 | Maturation of the style: gospel, reggae, polyphonic harmonies |
| Forever is 4 You | 2016 | More experimental direction; affirmed creative ambition |
| Score for a film about Malawi without music from Malawi | 2018 | Instrumental soundtrack, “zero-kilometer sound” |
Legacy
The Malawi Mouse Boys have brought to light music from the most remote margins of the continent22.
Their story inspires23.
From mouse skewers to the WOMAD festival, from Zomba church choirs to screens around the world24.
Their music, made of scraps of tin and plastic containers, proves that genius does not need studios25.
Despite poverty, they continue26.
