Calypso
Calypso is a musical style and dance originating from Trinidad and Tobago, born in the 1900s from African traditions (notably bélé and kaiso), European influences (mazurka, Trinidadian calypso) and the traditions of Caribean griot songs. Calypso is a satirical and engaged music, often sung in Creole English with percussion instruments (steel drum), guitar and brass.
The pioneers of calypso include Lord Kitchener (Aldric Simpson), Mighty Sparrow (Slinger Francisco) and the group Calypso Rose. The calypso steel band and gombé are associated forms. Calypso has influenced soca, reggae and all Anglophone Caribbean music.
