Funaná (Cap-Vert)

Style musical du Cap-Vert, dansant et rythmé

Funaná (Cape Verde)

The funaná is a musical style from Cape Verde originating on the island of Santiago. It is a fast, lively dance music played primarily with the diatonic accordion (bendinha), accompanied by percussion. Funaná is characterized by rapid accordion accompaniment, syncopated rhythms, and a festive energy.

The most famous artist is Nuninha (the “queen of funaná”) and groups like Catarina, which have internationalized the style. Funaná has spread throughout the Cape Verdean diaspora and is a cornerstone of Cape Verdean musical identity.
