Ndombolo
Ndombolo is a music and dance style originating from the Democratic Republic of Congo, emerging in the 1990s as an accelerated and more sensual evolution of soukous. Ndombolo is characterized by a fast rhythm, heavy basslines, and an explosive choreography centered on torso and hip movements.
The style was popularized by Koffi Olomide, who revolutionized Congolese soukous by incorporating elements of ndombolo dancing. Other notable figures include Papa Wemba (initially in the Congolese rumba scene), Gorix, and numerous modern rumba/nkolo groups.
Ndombolo has conquered all of Central and East Africa, influencing styles such as Ivorian coupé-décalé and South African house.
