Collecting clean drinking water, Somalia

DFID, www.flickr.com/photos/dfid
Once they've made it to Dolo Ado, and have been registered, people are able to get access to an allocation of 8-10 litres of water per person per day. This has to meet all of their needs, for drinking, cooking and washing. The average person in the UK uses 150 litres per day.
To find out more about how the UK is helping in Dolo Ado, and elsewhere across Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya, visit: www.dfid.gov.uk/Media-Room/News-Stories/2011/British-aid-...

Preventing famine in Somalia, a race against time
The majority of people arriving in the displaced camps are women and children. Men and boys are said to have stayed behind to tend to the remaining livestock or to take care of the elderly and the infirm. There are also allusions that they might not be allowed to leave. Much of the livestock is reported to have died. The fear is that the remaining animals will be swept away or succumb to diseases once the rains start.
