Point Four Beach near the Port of Monrovia.

The gathered women come from surrounding towns and villages with their containers ready to fill with fish to take to the markets. Within minutes the sales are complete and the women start the long walk back down the road. It’s five kilometres to the main road, and then a long taxi ride into Monrovia. Despite the bad conditions fishing communities will continue what they do. Local fish seller Prince Browne is committed to his work. “We live on the seaside, we believe in the fishing business,” he says.

Liberian and Ghanain fishermen on a Fanti fishing boat searching the waters around Monrovia, Liberia for any sign of a school of fish. The fishing industry is an important source of employment and food for Liberians and is increasingly under threat by better equipt and unregulated foreign vessels over fishing in its unprotected waters.
