SMC Campaign in Burkina Faso

Abdoul sips his SMC medicine with help from his mother Diane and a community health worker. PMI funding provided the medicine, which will help protect Abdoul from malaria during the rainy season. Credit: Camilla Peterson, PMI

Cone Bioassay

Here, 10 mosquitoes are being carefully blown into a cone placed against an insecticide-treated wall inside a home. PMI funded indoor residual spraying for this district to protect residents from malaria. The insecticide sprayed can remain effective for many months, and this test confirms it is still working.

In the tiny town of T.Wobdo, Burkina Faso, Mohamadi Kabore, 48 months, peeks behind his mother at the community health workers who have come to give him SMC with support from PMI. He's holding his health card, which shows he has received SMC in previous years. Credit: Camilla Peterson, PMI

SMC Campaign in Burkina Faso

Abdoul Rouamba, age 32 months, is hiding in his home under a mosquito net. A community health worker just gave him a medicine to protect him from malaria during the rainy season. But Abdoul, like most children, hates taking medicine and was keen to run away when finished. His mother Diane stayed smiling though, "he always cries when he takes his medicine, but it will keep him safe." Abdoul is one of more than 400,000 children PMI is helping protect with SMC in Burkina Faso. Credit: Irene Ngendakumana, PMI/Burkina Faso

As part of the SMC campaign, children under 5 also have their mid-upper arm circumference measured to assess their nutritional status. Here, Abdoul's reading is in the green zone, indicating he is growing well. Credit: Camilla Peterson, PMI
