World AIDS Day marked

World AIDS Day was observed at a national level in the Port city of Massawa under the theme: “Right to Health” on 1 December.

 

Massawa, 02 December 2017 - World AIDS Day was observed at a national level in the Port city of Massawa under the theme: “Right to Health” on 1 December.

Speaking at the event, in which ministers, senior Government and PFDJ officials, heads of UN institutions in Eritrea, as well as other invited guests took part, the D.G. of Public Health in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Andeberhan Tesfatsion indicated that owing to the coordinated effort exerted to combat the prevalence of the disease, the number of HIV/AIDS infections has decreased to less than 1% nationwide, and to 0.28% that of pregnant women and that in the last 12 years the prevalence of the disease has decreased by 78%.

Pointing out that about 9 thousand nationals living with HIV/AIDS are receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART), Dr. Andeberhan indicated that the incidence of HIV/AIDS infection is on the increase in women in general and that of sex workers in particular and called for integrated effort of concerned institutions with a view to meet the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

The head of HIV/AIDS and STDs Control in the Northern Red Sea region branch, Mr. Robel Aron on his part, pointed out that regular counseling and check up are undertaken in all health centers of the region and that HIV/AIDS infection that was 3.4% in 2005 has decreased to 0.39% at regional level.

Commending the endeavors being exerted by the people and government of Eritrea in combating HIV/AIDS, and underlining the difficulty of minimizing the prevalence rate of the disease to its lowest level, the representative of WHO in Eritrea, Dr. Josephine Namboze expressed her strong conviction that Eritrea will meet the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals a head of time.

World AIDS Day is commemorated for the 30th time worldwide and for the 24th time here in Eritrea.

General Audit provides training

The Eritrean General Audit as part of its effort to develop its human capacity provided six months training on auditing system.

Asmara, 02 December 2017- The Eritrean General Audit as part of its effort to develop its human capacity provided six months training on auditing system.

At the training, which was provided in collaboration with the African Organization for Supreme Audit Institutions in English Speaking Countries (AFROAI-E PA) and UNDP, 20 Eritreans and 2 Namibians took part.

The theoretical and practical training was provided in three phases, the first phase in Performance Audit basic modules, the second phase in Performance Audit Pre-study Module and the third in Performance Audit main study.

The General Manager of the Eritrean General Audit, Mr. Gerezgiher Gebremedhin gave briefing on the background and activities of the Eritrean General Audit and that the office is exerting strong effort in providing training to staff members and to introduce modern technology with a view to cope with the international auditing standard.

Indicating that Eritrea is one of the active members of the African Organization for Supreme Audit Institutions in English Speaking Countries (AFROAI-E PA), Mr. Joshua Asimwe, from the trainers, said that the training will have significant contribution in strengthening mutual cooperation and in developing human resources.

Tera-Emni: potable water supply problem alleviates

The residents of Tera-Emni, Dubarwa sub-zone explained that the severe potable water supply shortage they used to face has been resolved and that their livelihood is improving.

Mendefera, 02 December 2017- The residents of Tera-Emni, Dubarwa sub-zone explained that the severe potable water supply shortage they used to face has been resolved and that their livelihood is improving.

They Told ERINA that they are being provided potable water from 11 distribution centers put in place in their area.

The administrator of the administrative area, Mr. Yohannes Berhane indicated that potable water supply project, educational and heath services rendering facilities as well as transportation and electric power supply have been put in place and the residents are receiving commendable service.

Mr. Yohannes reiterated that the residents are significantly contributing for the success of the agricultural projects initiated by the Government.

Material support to fistula patients

The Committees of development, area administrations, as well as organization of the civil servants in the Keren sub zone contributed sanitation materials and clothing worth 80 thousand Nakfa to fistula patients in the Southern Region Referral Hospital.

 

Keren, 01 December 2017 – The Committees of development, area administrations, as well as organization of the civil servants in the Keren sub zone contributed sanitation materials and clothing worth 80 thousand Nakfa to fistula patients in the Southern Region Referral Hospital.

Speaking at the occasion, the head of NUEW branch in Keren sub zone, Ms. Huriya Idris said that the objective of the initiative was to encourage and extend moral support to the patients.

The Fistula expert at the Hospital, Dr. Dawit Sereke on his part stating fistula is both difficult and costly to treat and that creates emotional stress on the part of the patient, made a call on the society to play due role in preventing the causes of fistula.

The medical director of the Fistula Center at the Southern Region Referral Hospital, Dr. Amanuel Mihreteab also gave briefing on the medical activities conducted at the center, on the treatments and the rehabilitation programs provided to fistula patients and commended for the initiative.

The Fistula Center at the Southern Region Referral Hospital, is a governmental institution providing free of charge fistula treatment for patients coming from all over the country.
