Commemoration of Operation Fenkil Opens

Massawa, 10 February 2018 - The commemoration of the 28th Anniversary of Operation Fenkil was officially opened yesterday, 9 February in the port city of Massawa under the theme “Fenkil: Dawn of Freedom”. Mr. Alamin Mohammed  Seid, Secretary of the PFDJ, opened the event.

The event featured cycling and swimming competitions, cultural and fashion shows.

The commemoration will continue until 11 February featuring the laying of wreath of flowers at the Martyrs monument, various sports competitions, cultural shows, and public gatherings among others.

Meeting of Ambassadors of East African countries

The Ambassadors of East African countries held first regular meeting on 1 February in Pretoria, Republic of South Africa.

Asmara, 08 February 2018- The Ambassadors of East African countries held first regular meeting on 1 February in Pretoria, Republic of South Africa.

The objective of the meeting was to exchange information and ideas on the current situation in the African continent in general and that of the region in particular.

The meeting that was organized by the Eritrean Embassy was attended by the Ambassadors of Burundi, Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Seychelles, Tanzania and Uganda.

In the same vein, the Eritrean Ambassador to the Republic of South Sudan, Mr. Yohannes Teklemicael held seminar for the water truck owners nationals on the objective situation in the homeland.

At the end of the seminar, the participants elected five members executive committee.

Likewise, the Switzerland branch of the National Union of Eritrean Women held an activity assessment meeting in the city of Biel Bienne.

At the meeting it was indicated that strong effort to organize female youth, organizing sustainable seminars and workshops with a view to increase the awareness of members as well as finalizing the training center for women in Tesenei are the priority tasks for 2018.

The Eritrean youth residing in Israel that are organized in “Finote Semaetat Association” expressed conviction to continue the support being extended to families of martyrs and to conduct awareness campaigns to encourage other youth to join the association.

At the meeting it was reported that 12 youth have joined in the program of supporting families of martyrs and so far they have contributed 720 Dollars each.

The Charge d’Affairs at the Eritrean Embassy, Mr. Solomon Kinfe gave extensive briefing on the objective situation in the homeland and called for strengthening participation in the effort to support families of martyrs.

Assab, 08 February 2018- The Ministry of Health branch in the Southern Red Sea region conducted a meeting on 6 February with a view to review the implementation of activities of 2017 and on the charted out programs for 2018.

At the meeting detailed reports were presented as regards the activities conducted in ensuring the health of families and the community, controlling communicable diseases such as HIV/AIDS, TB and other non-communicable diseases as well as supply of medicines.

According to the reports presented, the number of people that took voluntary counseling has increased by 42%, 95% of the people infected by TB have been cured and commendable effort has been made in cooperation with stakeholders to control cross border diseases.

Indicating that praiseworthy effort has been made in the development of human resources and material supply, Mr. Asefaw Gebremicael, head of the Ministry of Health branch, commended the participation of stakeholders in the success of the vaccination program in remote areas.

Speaking at the event, the Governor of the region, Ambassador Mohammed-Seid Mantai pointing out that the growing usage of the public in the health facilities attest to the strong effort conducted on the part of the health experts and stakeholders, called for mobile health service for nationals that are not yet regrouped and living in remote areas.

In the Southern Red Sea region there are one Referral Hospital, 2 Community Hospitals, 12 health stations and one health center.

The Ministry of Education conducted a meeting on 6 and 7 February with a view to evaluate the implementation of activities of 2017 and on the plan of action for 2018.

Asmara, 07 February 2018- The Ministry of Education conducted a meeting on 6 and 7 February with a view to evaluate the implementation of activities of 2017 and on the plan of action for 2018.

Indicating that the meeting was conducted at the time in which the Ministry is conducting rigorous evaluation on the activities implemented from 2013 to 2017 and charting out five years plan of action, Mr. Semere Russom, Minister of Education, called for integrated effort and participation of all units of the Ministry in the implementation and development of the teaching and learning process.

At the meeting the departments of Adult Education, Technical and Vocational Training, Finance and Administration, General Education, Research and Human Resources Development as well as the branches of Boarding Schools and Information Technology presented activity reports.

The participants conducted extensive discussion on the progress and challenges encountered in adult education, effort to develop the quality of education, programs to develop human resources and their progress, as well as the situation of boarding schools. They also adopted recommendations including the establishment of teachers’ training centers in the regions and conducting sustainable performance appraisal of members.

International Day of Zero tolerance for FGM observed

International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM was observed on 5 February at national level here in the capital under the theme “End of FGM is Political Stance”.

Asmara, 07 February 2018- International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM was observed on 5 February at national level here in the capital under the theme “End of FGM is Political Stance”.

Speaking at the event in which senior Government officials and heads of national associations took part, Ms. Tekea Tesfamicael, Chairperson of the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW), said that the day is a reminder for renewing pledge for an end to FGM that the Eritrean women fought for many years. Ms. Tekea also called for integrated effort not only to abolish the practice of FGM but also harmful practices that are physically and psychologically affecting women.

Indicating that eradication of FGM worldwide is part of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, Ms. Amina Nur-Husein, Minister of Health, pointed out that Eritrea is rigorously working to that end. Minister Amina also called on women not to repeat the pain they experienced on their children.

Ms. Susan Ngongi, UN Resident Humanitarian Coordinator in Eritrea, expressed appreciation for the effort the Government of Eritrea is exerting towards reducing FGM to zero in accordance with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

It is to be recalled that the Eritrean Government issued legal notice 158/2007 to abolish the practice of FGM.

Mendefera, 07 February 2018 – Workshop on law was conducted to the students of the Adi-Keih College of Arts and Social Sciences and College of Business and Economics, report indicates.

At the workshop in which lecturers and administrators of the two colleges participated, Commander of Police in the Southern Region Col. Zemichael Tekliya gave extensive briefing on the mission and objective of police and called on the students to enhance their awareness on law and cooperate with the police alongside their academic activities.

In the same vein, in a seminar he conducted with the residents of the AdiQuala town, the head of crime prevention in the Southern Region Maj. Weldu Zeweldi stating that the family is the foundation called on parents to monitor the behavior of their children and strengthen participation in preventing crimes and traffic accidents.

Likewise, the Commander of Foro Police station, Captain Beraki Teklemariam indicated that the number of drivers that breach traffic rules is increasing and called on the residents to maximize cooperation with members of the police in ensuring peace of the town and for adhering to the cultural values of the society. Cap. Beraki made the call at a meeting he conducted with residents of Foro semi urban.

Keren, 06 February 2018- The newly built modern agricultural laboratory at Hamelmalo College of Agriculture is significantly contributing in developing the capacity of students in research activities. The comment was made by Dr. Berhane Kiar, research coordinator in the college.

Indicating that the college started research activities in 2005 with limited capacity, Dr. Berhane said that in 2017 a new laboratory center with 14 research rooms with modern laboratory equipment was built and that is contributing in the development of research activities in the college.

Dr. Berhane reiterated that currently research activities are being conducted on select seeds, tissue culture, vegetables and fruits, soil-its formation and content, pests, animal health and fodder. He also said that preparation is being finalized to begin research on food science and bio-technology.

Pointing out that the laboratory center will have significant contribution in developing research capacity in the country and in ensuring food security, Dr. Berhane stated that continuous effort will be exerted to develop the center with modern equipment and skilled human resources. He also said that effort is being made in cooperation with partners to ensure the supply of electric power and basic laboratory equipment for better outcome.

The instructors on their part said that the laboratory will help them translate the theoretical knowledge they acquired in to practicality.

Asmara, 06 February 2018 - The efforts to eradicate harmful practices in general and that of FGM and underage marriages has resulted in an encouraging outcome. The report was made at a meeting conducted on 02 February organized by the NUEW Central region office.

In a speech she delivered, Ms. Alem Belay, Chairwoman of the branch, reporting on the activities conducted and the outcomes registered in social, health, economy, political and administrative sectors, called for the enhanced participation of women in the 2018 charted out development programs.

Ms.Alem also indicated that 4 solar powered water motor pumps were provided to 20 women that are engaged in irrigation farming in the Serejaka and Gala Nefhi sub zones.

Stating that women representation in the election of area administrators and managing directors was low, Ms. Alem called on women to take advantage of the opportunities created and enhance participation in political matters.

In the comments they made, the participants called for increased organization of workshops on the rights and legal basis of women, creation of leadership opportunities for young women, and for enhanced provision of micro-credit opportunities among others.

The NUEW branch in the Central region has more than 75 thousand members organized in 1016 clusters.
