The Smiling African Child - Part 1
Give me a smile!!! No... I never asked a kid to smile, nor did I ask any kid to look sad, traumatized, curious, indifferent, reserved, happy...
I posted already a number of pictures on African kids from Sierra Leone, Angola and Uganda. Some of you replied, telling me how hard it must be for those kids. Some thought they were better of without any intervention - since that'd be the reason they are in the current position. And some felt that I posted too many kids looking sad, or scared, or ... well, at least not smiling!
Where are all those smiling kids??!!
Where are the 'UNICEF-thank-you-for-your-contribution-pictures'? (No, no, I don't work for Unicef ;-) )
In the end there is not such thing as "the African child". The low-educated child, the child with limited access to basic healcare, the aids-orphan child... Maybe in statistics, but in real life there are millions and they are all different. Some looking scared, some traumatized, some curious, but allmost all of them live their lives with a passion and spirit from which we can learn something!
For all those kids, and for all of you, the smiling African child ;-).
The little doll
This girl still has a year to go and she'll be carrying around a little brother or sister.
Childhood wears off quickly in Northern Uganda.
Though not yet understanding the impact of the camps and violence, she is already practicing with a little stick on her back to become a surrogate mother for her brothers and sisters...

Watching the children play
We're in a refugee camp outside of Gulu, Northern Uganda. The boy is watching other children play.
The other children are playing a game of an NGO. The white expatriate specialists found out that 'playing' is helping these children to cope with their remembrances of war. They can be a child again, as the slogan states.
This boy wasn't ready 'to be a child again'. As a child soldier, he might have been forced to walk around with a very adult AK47. Or he might have seen other children do things that children normally never do. Or he's just living in the refugee camp and one of the lucky few to be choosen by the NGO to play with the balls and 'be a child again'.
I was told that he wasn't ready to participate. And this was due to all the horrible things he had been through.
I personally think this boy was much smarter than all the white NGO specialists think! This boy knew that throwing a ball would not get the people back who disappeared from his village. He knew that throwing a ball would not help him being accepted in his village. And he knew that throwing a ball would not help him getting his childhood back. They all lost that years ago when the war started. Whether or not they were a child soldier, lost families or saw horrible things - they were all robbed of their childhood.
And right now, he's much more interested how he can get his life back on track as a young adolescent.
Girl with baby
I made this picture being in Nortern Uganda for a Dutch child-based NGO. The area Gulu - Kitgum - Lira was at that time frequently attacked by the LRA.
The girl hasn't known anything else than camps and violence. She did what she had to do and took care of her little sister, who she has on her back. A little girl who already outgrew childhood years ago.
Sad, but daily reality in Northern Uganda.
