Mandingue (Mandingue music)

Mandingue music encompasses the musical traditions of the Manding peoples (Mali, Guinea, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire). Centered on traditional instruments such as the korra, the ngoni (lute), djembé, and griot chants, the Mandingue style is the root of many modern West African musics.

Mandingue griot families, heirs to a millennial oral tradition, perpetuate the epic chants of the Mali Empire and great African empires. Toumani Diabaté (korra) and the Symba are major artists.
