Boys

Boys respond excitedly to me and my camera in the rundown heart of Djibouti City.

I find it interesting that the curiosity all children have is so similar in such varied cultures. In Djibouti, people believe that photographs are satanic. I had constant difficulty photographing or filming anyone. But the children, they had no apprehension. They yearned to experience a photograph, to see something new and different. They were untainted by the cultural traditions of the parents.

In the Bay

Returning in the evening from our scuba outing. Looking Northwest across the gulf of Tadjoura.

Tropical Oasis

I took a boat out with a bunch of Americans from the military base to go scuba diving. This is Moucha Island, out in the Gulf of Aden. Reefs are incredible in this area. You can see, close to the beach, the reef mere feet under the surface. In the deeper reef I found a large moray eel and a herd of sea cucumbers. The water was warm and calm and full of life.

Blue Allure

A wonderful representation of the Djiboutian dichotomy: arid, dead Martian landscape contrasting with a magnificent azure ocean of warm water and teaming reefs.

somaliland Wild Life

www.somalioz.com - this photo belongs to Yusuf Dahir, we used it with his permission and greatful for it. Its one of my favourite pictures. Its a small peek of Somaliland wild life.

Death

The fog rolled back suddenly revealing the twisted form of a long dead tree. Taken as we hiked from Dittilou, back up the winding trail to Foret Du Day.

Rock Wall

This is a close up of a rock wall at Dittilou, running along our little huts. Wanting to test a PS theory, I added the rips.

Roof

The roof of a native hut. I found it strangely appealing.

Let Sleeping Dogs Lie

One of the stray dogs that followed us on our backpacking trip to Dittilou. There is blood on his leg from his battles 'defending' us from baboons. Thanks to him I never got a good photo of a baboon.
