This is me and Jim, waiting our turn to go inside the Oilbird cave at Asa Wright. Oilbirds are the only noctural fruit-eating birds in the world, and live only in Trinidad and northern South America. The cave at Asa Wright is the most easily accessible Oilbird colony in the world. Jim and his wife Karen are enthusiastic amateur birders, and this trip to Trinidad (home to lots and lots of cool birds) was the trip of a lifetime for them. It was their first trip outside of the U.S.

The view from the back porch at the Asa Wright Nature Center. Here, birders would stand with their giant binoculars and/or telescopes, peering out at the trees, occasionally saying things like "there! a white-breasted tanager! do you see it? okay, do you see the light green flat-topped tree? ok, three trees to the left, there's a branch sticking up on the right-hand side. he's sitting right there!" And I'm all like, you lost me at light green flat-topped tree.
