Welwitschia

Taken at the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden Conservatory....

Welwitschia is named after the Austrian botanist and doctor Friedrich Welwitsch, who was the first European to describe the plant, in 1859 in present-day Angola. It is endemic in Angola and Namibia.

The age of individual plants is difficult to assess, but many plants may be over 1000 years old. Some individuals may be more than 2000 years old.

Welwitschia only produces a single pair of foliage leaves with separate male and female plants.

This macro image is the centre stem with the two leaves right and left.....

Many thanks for your visit, kind comments, invites and favs....it is always appreciated....

Happy Weekend My Friends

Cuito Cuanavale, ANGOLA: (FILES) This file picture taken 29 February 1988 near Cuito Cuanavale, southern Angola, shows an Angolan soldier holding a Soviet-made AK-47 Kalashnikov, as he guards a battery of Soviet-made ground-to-air missiles, in the region where Soviet-backed regular Angolan army and Cuban soldiers are fighting against anti-Marxist and Western-backed UNITA nationalist movement. The Kalashnikov rifle celebrates in 2007 its 60th anniversary and, according to a report by the Control Arms campaign released in June 2006, it will remain the most widely-used weapon in conflict zones for at least the next 20 years because it is so poorly regulated.
