Fitzroy

He was sitting on a bench near the docks on Lake Ontario’s shoreline with his construction crew friends. They were having their mid-morning meal. Like most construction workers, he gets up before dawn to start work by 7:00 so lunchtime comes early. I walked over to say hi and have a chat. They were working on a commercial building across the street and were interested in where I and my friends were going on our bicycles. As we chatted it struck me that his face was full of character and that he would make a good portrait. I floated the request and he was surprised but when I told him I was serious and pulled out my camera he said “If you want, sure.” Meet Fitzroy.

I took a couple of portraits, positioning myself so as to use the paving stones behind the bench as a background, then suggested we take a few steps to have him facing me from the end of a tree-lined promenade. The focus of both settings, however, was Fitzroy’s strong, friendly features. His friends did the necessary teasing, telling him to smile and saying he was going to be a movie start. Fitzroy didn’t mind a tease and I told them “He doesn’t need to smile. He knows he looks good regardless.”

I was going to take a photo of the four of them sitting on the bench but it seemed break time was over and his friends had disbanded and were heading across the street with a friendly “Have a good ride.” Fitzroy said he could take a couple more minutes. “They aren’t too fussy on this job.”

Fitzroy is 60 and came to Canada from Jamaica 35 years ago. He’s a welder by trade and said it’s a good trade. The building they are constructing nearby is a commercial structure. I asked what he likes most about being a welder and he said “I always have work and can look after my family.” Fitzroy’s message to the project is “Work hard and you can achieve whatever you want.” With that, Fitzroy had picked up his lunch bag from the bench and it was time for him to put on his goggles and get back to work. It was also time for me and my cycling friends, all retired, to hop on our bikes and head west. I thanked Fitzroy for being part of my project and we said goodbye. His handshake was strong.

This is my 534th submission to The Human Family Group on Flickr.
