The Bird Rock @ Anse Source d'Argent, La Digue, Seychelles

Seychelles is a dreamland and this is one of my favorite images from La Digue. This was my second visit to this little paradise and I probably that happened for this picture. Off course not only; but this was the highest in the wish list.

There is a small history behind it. In my last visit I was there in the same location during sunset. The sunset was spectacular. The sky was burning. But as usual the best color is a bit on the right of the rock where the sun actually goes down. In the pursue of the color I moved from the right composition and went to the left of the rock. Finally when I realized that the shape of the rock is actually everything in the composition and from the left the shape is not visible and it looks like any other dark rock; it was too late. I was just mad at myself that I have lost such a sunset. I didn't even bother processing those images. Beautiful sunset color is nice; but an image works for beautiful composition and light. Only one of them doesn't really work. It was a great learning for me.

So here it is. In the next visit I was lucky that the sky was pretty good in the first go itself. Although it was nothing compared to the one I missed last time. But good enough to satisfy me. On top I took my time in this vacation. It was of two weeks compared to one week of last time. This is another learning. When you go so far and specially in a tropical places where weather is extremely unpredictable; you should give yourself more time if you are interested in serious photography. The plan did pay off. I had got some beautiful sunset and sunrise shots. At the same time several days were washed out as well. So that extra time helped me capturing some good shots. I would have run out of time if the trip would have been of one week.

Regarding this image; the capturing part was pretty standard once the composition was set. Checked focus and aperture to make sure that I have the right DOF. Under exposed a bit to keep the highlight not clipping the histogram in live view helped deciding that. The D850 is a formidable machine. I could pick up the shadow details of the rock without any problem and without any notion of noise.

However; the sharpness of the Nikon 24 70 2.8 is annoying me a bit and it is more visible in this high resolution D850. Yes I know people will say that sharpness of lens depend on the photography technique and blah blah. I am now doing serious photography for 10 years and I do know and understand every bit of technique behind a sharp image. I am in engineer and I understand the physics of optics very well. The Nikon 24 70 is just not as good glass as my Canon 24 70 2.8 II. That is it. There is no argument that will make a relatively poor glass better! No, it is not something unusable; but it is just not as good for such a high resolution camera and when you have both of them; definitely the comparison will come. I still love my Canon gear. The Canon color is my favorite. The Zoom lens of Canon are much better. The live view works much better in low light. The live view auto focus is way more accurate and efficient. The TSE lenses are far better. So I use the Canon for whatever little portrait I do and for all my architecture shots. But the main two components of landscape photography are very much missing in Canon (specially in 5DSR; which is a benchmark for sharp image though!). Dynamic range and better high ISO performance. D850 shines dramatically in those two departments. On top the 14 24 F2.8 and 70 200 F4 are amazing piece of glasses. That is why that D850 will stays in my bag whenever I go out for landscape photography now a days! So I just have to bridge that 24 70 focal length with Nikon and Sigma Art primes. That will probably make my Nikon system as good as my Canon system with some more weight, space and reduced flexibility of the zoom; but I am happen for all kind of compromises for better image quality. If I can carry a 24 KG bag pack on my hikes; 2 more KGs will not make much different. I will just go a bit slower and take my time. Fine with me as long as I get that better image quality!

I will be interested to hear from the ones who used the zoom and the prime in 24 70 focal length.
