GM in Zaire 1977

$8.5 million was spent building this factory, which opened in1975 to build 4000 trucks and 8000 cars per year. I wonder if it is still operating.

Recycled blinds

Made these blinds from old flour sacks I bought in Zaire (Democratic Republic of Congo) about 20 years ago. Love the raw cotton and the printed blue design. They're now in my kitchen.

Kuba Pwoom Itok Mask

One of the principal Kuba dance masks is called Pwoom Itok; it was part of the Kuba royal circle of masks. The chief identifying characteristic of the Pwoom Itok mask is the shape of the eyes, whose centers are cones surrounded by holes through which the wearer sees. The mask would have originally been attached to a more elaborate headdress consisting of feathers and raffia cloth. These masks, like many Kuba masks, are polychrome or multicolored--although this specimen is monochrome.

Songye (Songe) Kifwebe Mask

The Songye tribe is located in the southeastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Abstract masks of this type had a great influence over Cubism in the early part of the 20th century.

The best known mask of the Songye tribe is known as the "Kifwebe" mask. These masks are typically associated with abstract shapes. The Kifwebe face is usually covered with linear incisions which are sometimes pigmented, the mouth is most often square and protruding. If it has a central crest, it is masculine; if not, feminine. The size of the crest determines the magical power of the mask. Kifwebe masks are used as agents of a tradition and figures of authority to exercise social and political control through practices of evil magic and witchcraft by the members of the bwadi bwa kifwebe society.
