A scuba diver prepares for a trip. Now part of the Grand Barbados Hotel (Carlisle Bay, St. Michael), the structure seen here was once the pier of the Aquatic Club, which operated from the 1940s to the 1980s (approx) when a Holiday Inn replaced the main building. Like many of the social institutions of the time, this club was racially segregated (see this document - p.7 - bancroft.berkeley.edu/ROHO/wgmn_papers/mary_chamberlain_p... for an interesting note on the club's character.
