Damaraland Village

I love the playground in the back. Kraal houses made of large sticks. The people who worked at the lodge were all from here.

Desert Adapted Elephants

Namibia's desert-dwelling elephants are of high national and international conservation priority. There are only 2 groups in the world where there are these types of elephants - the other in Mali, Africa. These ones live in the Kunene Region, mostly sandy desert, rocky mountains and gravel plains in Namibia's northwest. We travelled 7 hours by bumpy road to get to Damaraland - a sandy, windy and rocky place.

Namibia Desert Elephants

They have adapted to their semi-desert environment by having a smaller body mass with longer legs and larger feet than other elephants. This allows them to cross miles of sand dunes to reach water. They have even been filmed sliding down a dune face to drink at a pool in a desert oasis.

Little Baby Elephant

Family groups of desert elephants are smaller than those found in the savannah. By living in smaller family units of only two or three animals, they decrease pressure on food and water resources.

Desert Elephants of Namibia

They survive by eating moisture-laden vegetation growing in short lasting riverbeds and go several days without drinking water. Sometimes they must travel long distances to reach a water source.

Southern Pale Chanting Goshawk (Melierax canorus)

Southern Pale Chanting Goshawk. Captured in Etosha National Park, in Namibia Africa in May 2017. This bird had just finished a meal of some sort on the ground and flew up to the top of this bush to have a look around.

They are truly striking looking birds and easily identified with those orange beaks and legs. The pale chanting goshawk eats a variety of vertebrate prey, mainly lizards, but also small mammals and birds, and large insects. It often walks on the ground.

Thanks for viewing, and any comments are truly appreciated.
