Filming the Himba
It was a scandal in Sweden.
A reality TV show, where one Swedish family lived in a traditional Himba village for a week, camped out in Kunene and made a TV programme worth millions of Euros.
In return, the Himba were given a few bags of maize and some sugar.
When questioned the low level of payment, by the production manager on site that “Himba’s are anyway doing nothing”. That attitude is frightening.
Even if most of the villagers in the area do not have a job in the formal sector, and instead make a living out of their livestock, they should benefit from a fair compensation for their work.
The film company also did not comply with the regulations for filming among the Himba. As the Himba often live in severe poverty, with high levels of illiteracy, and many communities lack knowledge of laws and regulations which guarantee their rights, a Namibian human rights organisation is commissioned with giving training to the affected groups.
Prior knowledge would have enabled the community to have a better position in the negotiations with the production company, and resulted in a more fair, legally-binding agreement.
Ultimately, when news about the poor treatment hit Swedish media, the filmmakers came back with apologies and fair compensation.

Brown Hyena
A rare brown hyena near the Skeleton Coast Camp in northwestern Namibia. It was our first night there and the first wildlife we had seen. At the time, we didn't really realize that seeing a brown hyena was such a rare thing.
