LED there be light on Vimeo by Butch & Sundance

Sustainable energy supply might be a solution for the growing demand for electricity in Africa. It can also be a tool for development. In combination with new technologies like LED, people don't longer have to light their homes with oil, kerosene or fire(wood). We brought a solar LED light to Juba, Sudan and asked a nice family to use it and let us know what they thought of it.

Epilobium hirsutum - stolon tip Calandstraat, Leiden, NL 10 Aug 2008 07 Leo

This plant is a hemicryptophyte and a helophyte. Although every winter the above-ground portions of the plant die off, it is still a perennial. in the autumn lateral buds near the base of the main stem produce fleshy stolons, such as the one pictured above, which grow along the ground just below the surface of the soil. It is a helophyte because it can stand frequently waterlogged soils.
The roots you see here are adventitious, because this is actually a stem. Those thingys sticking off it are apparently called 'cataphylls'.

See. No petioles, hairy stem.

Epilobium hirsutum - lvs Calandstraat, Leiden, NL 10 Aug 2008 05 Leo

On distribution: This plant is native throughout Eurasia and much of northern, eastern and southern Africa, and has been introduced to eastern Australia and northeastern and the northern west coastal regions of North America.

This is the list of countries it is seen as native in: Iceland, Ireland, UK, Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, Denmark, Poland, Belarus, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Albania, Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, India, Russia, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Mongolia, Nepal, Myanmar, Bhutan, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Sudan, Chad, Niger, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, DRC, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, and Namibia.
It is found in the Canary Islands and Cape Verde, but nativity seems questionable.

It is apparently not found in Somalia, Djibouti, Sri Lanka or Taiwan.

I still must check the distribution in these areas: Malta? Middle East? Taiwan? Caucasus? Central Asia? Mozambique? Madagascar? SE Asia?

Here's some notes:
North America:
I was first inclined to think that the distribution in North America was again injudiciously seen as non-native, but I have since revised my opinion. There are three main reasons why this plant is probably not native to the USA and Canada:
1. Someone actually wrote a report explaining a timeline for its introduction; 'Distributional History of Epilobium hirsutum (great hairy willow-herb) in North America' by R. L. Stuckey, written 1970.
2. Looking at the proven distribution as provided by Den Virtuella Floran
(http://linnaeus.nrm.se/flora/di/onagra/epilo/epilhir.html) shows that it is not so adapted to northern conditions that a Bering Strait crossing during the Ice Age is likely.
3. Deilephila elpenor, a moth which uses this plant as a host plant does not share a North American distribution with E. hirsutum (well actually, it seems to have been introduced recently in southwest Canada).

Scandinavia: Some publications say it does not occur in Scandinavia. This is not true, it occurs throughout along the southern Baltic and North Sea coasts.

PFAF has quoted that fact, and Jean-François Leger from Tela Botanica probably got it from them. Tea in Russian is Чай, which is pronounced something like 'chaí', for one.

UNHCR News Story: Impressions of UNHCR’s work in Chad

Greg Millar, from UNHCR Washington, found his two-week mission to see our operation in Chad the most memorable in his career.

Impressions of UNHCR’s work in Chad.

WASHINGTON, USA, 1st December - Two weeks in Chad in early October became the most memorable experience in my 20 year fund-raising career.

Eastern Chad hosts 257,000 refugees from Darfur in 12 UNHCR camps along the Sudan border and 167,000 internally displaced people. There are 52,000 refugees from the Central African Republic in Southern Chad.

I joined a small group visiting Djabal and Gaga refugee camps in Eastern Chad and an IDP settlement in Goz Beida. We then traveled south and visited Gondje, Dosseye and Moundou camps.

I came away with some vivid memories. I met three teenage brothers whose parents had been killed in Darfur. One of the boys skillfully played a beautiful guitar-like instrument he had made and each talked about his life and the importance of education. Education is seen by so many as the main hope of some day being able to return and make a difference in the life and future of their country.

One young father soon to be resettled to the US spoke with such hope that one day his two daughters would use their upcoming US education to go back and make a positive difference in Africa.

Sport has an incredibly important part to play in the lives of children in the camps. It was only during the soccer and the basketball games that the group I was with almost became invisible as the children focused on the game they were either in, or playing.

There was the young father of two girls who talked sadly about the loss of his father and brother in Darfur, and it was painful to see his sadness and loneliness. On my final day in the South of Chad I met with a group of mothers who had only just arrived in the UNHCR camp, so many of them had fled after their husbands had been killed in the Central African Republic.

I share with you four brief observations.

UNHCR is at the forefront of the humanitarian efforts in Chad, effectively reaching parts of the country where very few other agencies have a presence.

Chad is a complex situation, with no simple protection formulas or durable solutions, yet UNHCR is clearly grappling with this and has developed some innovative and effective responses.

UNHCR staff live in incredibly difficult situations, in basic conditions, often extremely isolated and they work incredibly long hours.

I became increasingly aware, in the course of this brief mission, of the many millions of lives that have been saved and protected over the past 59 years thanks to the work of UNHCR. In visiting these camps, I was overwhelmed by the fact that although the number of displaced people can sometimes appear so vast, each is a very real person with his or her own story of both tragedy and hopes and dreams.

Fishing in Atbara

This set of shots was my first attempt at silhouette photography and although I usually prefer taking shots without people, I have to say this was not too bad at all. Perhaps I am hiding all the flaws because I am posting a smaller resolution shot. Having said that, the Nikon D40 will not take any crowns for it's 6 megapixel sensor.
All EXIF details should be here in case you were wondering what I have done post processing.
